Dental Implants
When you have a missing tooth due to an extraction, a Dental implant is a permanent option to restore the missing tooth.
An implant is an alternative to using a denture or a dental bridge.
What is involved?
A minor surgical procedure placing a titanium implant into the bone of your jaw. After this it is followed by a porcelain crown that’s attached to the implant permanently.
Dental implants and dental crowns are your strongest options to look like natural teeth and to give you the function of a natural tooth. They are extremely stable compared to dentures & don’t require additional maintenance like a denture except for the usual brushing and flossing. They also don’t require anything done to the adjacent teeth like a dental bridge would.
How does the dentist place a dental implant?
By performing a thorough dental check up with x-rays, we can give you a confident answer if dental implants are a good option for you. If it is, we arrange a special
3-D X-ray of your jaw to assess the bone structure but also provide us the best visibility on where the implant may go,
Once that is done, you will be shown a surgical report outlining the procedure and time frame. On top of that we fabricate a surgical guide, which is used during the surgery to place the dental implant accurately, efficiently and safely.
A single implant placement normally takes approximately 30-40 minutes depending on the procedures and can be done in the chair under regular local anaesthesia. Once inserted we leave the dental implant covered and give it time to integrate with your bone for approximately 3 months.
After we are confident the implant is stable, we uncover it and take a mould of your teeth which we send to a reputable local dental ceramist. They then help fabricate a porcelain crown to attach to the dental implant. This takes them about 2 weeks and then we fit the implant crown which takes roughly 15 minutes.
3-D X-rays allows visualisation of important structures around the implant site, potential implant placement (to scale) and volume of bone

What are dental implants and the crown made of?
Dental implants that are placed within bone are usually made of Pure Titanium (Grade 4). Depending on the implant crown design and structure, the crown may be made of a metal alloy structure and porcelain (lithium disilicate or zirconia).
How do I know if dental implants are right for me?
- Pre-existing medical conditions, medications and allergies
- Current dental status – health of existing teeth and availability of space to fit additional teeth
- Current gum health – presence (or history) of any gum disease
- Lifestyle factors such as smoking may compromise the success of treatment
- Availability of bone at potential implant site
