Cleaning of Teeth and Gums

At SIA Dental, our dentists perform dental cleaning procedures ranging from a basic plaque and tartar removal, to a more comprehensive deep gum cleaning. Your treatment needs will depend on your current gum health, which will be assessed at your initial consultation.

What is gum disease?

Your teeth and gums require regular attention. Gum disease can be very aggressive. It affects not just your gums but the underlying bones which hold your teeth in place.

Gingivitis is usually the early stage gum disease. You’ll notice bleeding gums when you brush your teeth and redness or swelling of the gums.

This needs to be controlled otherwise the gum begins to shrink permanently and bone is affected shortly after. This typically leads to long term infection and potentially loose teeth. At this point, it is called periodontitis which has different levels of severity. Gum disease causes irreversible effects and so we highly recommend early treatment to control and halt it’s progress.

What causes Gum Disease?

The main cause is poor oral hygiene. This leads to a build up of plaque which begins to attack the gums.

Smoking, Age and genetics all have a playing factor in the severity of gum disease.

Our aim is to tackle the factors that may be causing your gum disease.

At SIA Dental Burwood, your check up and clean includes a thorough a gum health check . If we find that there is gum disease we will work with you to formulate a plan to treat it. If it’s extremely severe we may need to refer you to a specialist Periodontist.

What is a Scale and Clean?

Our Services

The Dentist uses a top of the range ultrasonic tool which creates high frequency vibrations in water. This allows it to break apart the sticky plaque and tartar that sticks to your teeth and gums. Once that is complete, the dentist performs a thorough teeth polish which helps remove staining and clears up the rest of the surface of the teeth.

This can normally take 20 to 30 minutes. When appropriate we may recommend a few visits to complete the rest of your teeth if the build up of plaque and tartar is excessive. The dentist will advise you before hand.

When would you need a Deep Gum Clean or a ‘Perio Clean’.

When gum disease has progressed, and the gum has begun to irrevesibly shrink, we may need to use specific tools to clean underneath your gums. This removes bacteria that is damaging the bone underneath your gums.  Where appropriate we may recommend that you are numbed before this treatment commences to have a more comfortable experience.
